North Carolina – A sharp chill hangs over the Triangle this morning as calm air settles across rooftops and thin frost gathers along parked cars. Sunlight will brighten the region soon, but the crisp feeling stays in place as very cold air remains locked over central North Carolina heading into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, today turns sunny but brisk, with highs near 46 and winds occasionally gusting above 20 mph. Drivers should expect dry pavement but biting wind at highway speeds, especially along stretches of I-40 and I-440. Residents heading out for early holiday errands should dress warm; temperatures recover slowly through midday.

Sunday brings the first meaningful weather change. Clouds build by morning, and a 30% chance of rain develops by afternoon. If showers reach the Triangle earlier than expected, Post-Thanksgiving travel may slow as visibility dips and pavement turns damp. Keep coats and umbrellas ready; winds stay lighter, but the air still feels cool.

Meteorologists now track a much broader pattern shaping up for the first week of December. Models hint at a deeper cold push between December 2 and December 6, which could deliver temperatures well below normal from the Midwest through the Carolinas. A Winter Tease may emerge Tuesday night as rain returns and readings slip toward the mid-30s. A brief snow chance or rain-to-mix changeover cannot be ruled out in higher elevations north and west of Raleigh, though confidence remains low.

This early-season cold follows a major winter storm striking the Midwest today and Saturday, where 6–12 inches of snow may impact states from Iowa to Michigan. While that system stays far to the northwest, its trailing cold front helps drive next week’s chill into North Carolina.
