Providence, RI – As Rhode Island approaches Black Friday weekend, weather officials are encouraging Providence-area homeowners to finalize winter preparations before another round of freezing nighttime temperatures moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the state may experience more abrupt temperature swings this season under the influence of La Niña, with Providence, Warwick, and Cranston expected to see overnight lows fall into the upper 20s late Friday. These sharp freeze–thaw cycles can increase the likelihood of burst pipes, roof ice, and heating system strain, particularly in older homes across Providence County.
Home maintenance experts say residents should begin with the most urgent tasks: insulating exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawl spaces, and garages. Clearing gutters and downspouts is also essential to help prevent ice dams, which can develop quickly during Rhode Island’s early-winter temperature swings.
Energy specialists recommend sealing drafty windows and doors, checking attic insulation levels, and testing heating systems ahead of colder December conditions. State fire officials also urge homeowners to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, noting that heating-related incidents rise statewide between Thanksgiving and early winter.
With many families hosting or traveling during the holiday weekend, emergency managers advise residents to check on older adults, neighbors, or anyone who may need assistance preparing their homes before temperatures drop further.
