Boston, MA – As Massachusetts heads into Black Friday weekend, state weather officials are urging Boston-area homeowners to finish winter preparations before another round of freezing temperatures arrives across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this year’s La Niña pattern may bring more abrupt shifts between mild afternoons and sudden overnight freezes. These swings can increase the risk of burst pipes, roof ice, and heating system strain across Suffolk, Middlesex, and Essex Counties. Forecast models indicate that Boston, Cambridge, and Quincy may see overnight lows dip into the 20s late Friday into early Saturday.
Home maintenance specialists recommend completing key winterization tasks ahead of the cold snap. That includes insulating exposed pipes, especially in older triple-decker buildings and multifamily homes throughout Boston and surrounding communities. Clearing gutters and downspouts is also critical to reduce ice dams, which often form quickly in Massachusetts’ coastal climate when meltwater refreezes overnight.
Energy experts advise residents to seal drafty windows and doors, check attic insulation, and schedule heating system tests before December’s colder pattern settles in. Fire officials say homeowners should also test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, noting that heating-related incidents increase statewide immediately after Thanksgiving.
With many households hosting or returning from holiday travel, emergency managers encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors or family members who may need help preparing their homes before temperatures fall through the weekend.
