MANTENO, Ill. – As the weather improves, the Manteno Police Department is reminding all residents that dogs must be leashed while in public areas, according to the Manteno Village Ordinance 4-4-15.

This includes streets, alleys, sidewalks, and any private property without permission from the owner.

This reminder comes as Illinois ranks #2 in the United States for dog-related injury insurance claims in 2022, according to data published by State Farm.

Nationally, State Farm reports a 30% increase in payouts for dog-related injuries, with the company paying out nearly $211 million in one year alone. Children between the ages of 5-9 are most commonly affected, and the face is the most common area for a dog bite.

Chicago ranks third among cities with the most postal worker attacks by dogs. The Manteno Police Department urges all residents to keep their dogs leashed to ensure the safety of everyone in the community.
