COLUMBIA, S.C. – A calm, foggy dawn hides what’s ahead: South Carolina’s sharpest temperature swing of the season. Warm 80-degree air this morning will give way to gusty winds, plummeting temperatures, and even a Freeze Watch by Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, a Lake Wind Advisory goes into effect this afternoon as a strong cold front approaches from the west. West winds could gust up to 35 mph across open areas and lakes, creating rough water and dangerous conditions for small boats through late tonight.
The bigger story, though, is the Freeze Watch in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s to low 30s, ending the growing season across much of central South Carolina. Areas including Columbia, Lexington, Aiken, and Orangeburg should prepare for the first widespread frost and freeze of the season.
Homeowners are urged to protect pipes, plants, and pets before temperatures tumble. Bring in tender vegetation, disconnect garden hoses, and wrap exposed plumbing. Boaters should use extra caution today as winds and waves increase across Lake Murray and nearby waters.
After the front passes, Veterans Day will dawn clear and cool with highs in the lower 50s — nearly 30 degrees colder than today. Winds will ease by afternoon, giving way to a stretch of bright, crisp days through midweek.
By Thursday, highs rebound into the upper 60s and low 70s under sunny skies, offering a comfortable close to a dramatic early November weather shift. The brief chill marks the start of the state’s winter transition, a reminder that deeper cold is just around the corner.
