Pontiac, IL – Chaos and mayhem ensued on Sunday, March 12th, 2023, at 11:04 AM, as the Pontiac Fire Department received an urgent call about a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 55.

With multiple patients requiring immediate medical attention, the incident commander quickly realized the gravity of the situation and called the Pontiac Fire Department’s Life Safety Box Alarm to the first level.

The situation was dire, and the OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center’s Emergency Department was immediately notified. However, despite the valiant efforts of the emergency responders, the weather conditions proved to be a massive hurdle as the Life Flight helicopter was unable to take off.

But the Pontiac Fire Department was not to be deterred. They quickly dispatched all five of their ambulances, Squad 66, a Shift Commander, and three Chiefs to the scene. In addition, an ALS Dwight Ambulance was also dispatched to assist with medical care and transportation.

In the end, five patients were transported directly to OSF Saint James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center’s Emergency Department, and the brave responders were able to handle the situation with remarkable skill and precision.

Along with the resources directly deployed to the scene, several other units were also dispatched to cover Pontiac for any additional emergencies that may have arisen while the Pontiac Fire Department was operating on I-55. The Life Safety Box Alarm dispatched Cullom’s Squad, Fairbury’s Engine, Gridley’s ALS Ambulance, Saunemin’s BLS Ambulance, and SELCAS’s ALS Ambulance.

The Pontiac Fire Department received support from the Vermillion Valley Regional Emergency Communications Dispatch Center, Pontiac Police Department, Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, and the Illinois State Police, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation during emergencies.
