Medford, Ore. – Beachgoers along the southern Oregon coast are being urged to stay off jetties, rocks, and logs Tuesday as a powerful ocean swell raises the risk of dangerous sneaker waves from Curry County north through Coos and Douglas. These sudden, fast-moving waves can surge higher up the beach than expected, knocking people off their feet and dragging them into the ocean.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the combination of long-period swells and strong wave energy will make beaches hazardous throughout the day Tuesday. Sneaker waves often appear without warning, making it difficult for even experienced visitors to react in time. Logs and large debris may be rolled or lifted by the surf, adding another layer of danger.

Officials urge residents and visitors to stay well back from the surf line and avoid turning their back on the ocean. Anyone swept into the water should not be followed in—call 911 immediately and maintain visual contact until help arrives.

The high sneaker wave threat is expected to persist through Tuesday evening, with conditions easing by midweek as the swell diminishes. Beachgoers should remain cautious until advisories are lifted.
