Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers, students, and parents to stay alert as National School Bus Safety Week begins today, October 20, 2025. The campaign emphasizes the importance of patience and awareness when buses are on the road.

According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, motorists must always stop when approaching a stopped school bus on a two-lane road—regardless of direction. On four-lane highways, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction should proceed with caution but are not required to stop.

The Patrol urges parents to remind students to stay seated, keep aisles clear, and never throw objects or reach outside bus windows. Children should also know where emergency exits are located and should always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus while following the driver’s signals.

Bus drivers are required by state law to activate the stop arm and flashing lights when loading or unloading students. The Patrol stresses that extra caution and slower speeds are essential in school zones and neighborhoods, where children may step into the roadway unexpectedly.

“Drivers, students, and parents should remain patient and aware when school bus transportation is in use,” the Patrol stated. “Not only does this protect school children, but it ensures the safety of all motorists as well.”
