Des Moines, IA – Iowans could see the first frost of the fall season tonight as temperatures are forecast to drop into the 30s across northern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

The agency reports overnight lows between 35°F and 46°F, with the coldest readings expected in north-central and northeastern Iowa, including areas near Mason City, Decorah, and Estherville. Residents are advised to protect sensitive outdoor plants as patchy frost may form in low-lying areas early Wednesday morning.

According to the NWS, overnight temperatures in the 30s are likely to return Wednesday night and Thursday morning across eastern Iowa before a warming trend arrives toward the end of the week.

Cities including Sioux City, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, and Dubuque could experience lows in the lower 40s, while southern Iowa is expected to remain slightly warmer.

The expected chill marks a shift toward more seasonal autumn weather following a stretch of mild early October conditions.
