Burlington, VT – Northern New England is in for a wet stretch this week, but forecasters say the rainfall won’t be enough to ease ongoing drought conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, multiple rounds of showers are expected through Friday, September 26, 2025. Forecast maps show a 40% to 60% probability that areas of Vermont, northern New York, and western New Hampshire could receive more than 0.75 inches of rain by the end of the week.

Despite these chances, meteorologists caution that the region remains in a significant rainfall deficit. “Unfortunately, rainfall totals aren’t expected to be enough to significantly impact our drought conditions,” the agency noted Tuesday. “At this point, we need several inches of rain to see any real lessening of the drought.”

The highest rainfall probabilities stretch across central Vermont and the Adirondacks in New York, where chances exceed 50%. Meanwhile, southern New England, including parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, show lower probabilities, generally under 30%.

The unsettled weather pattern could bring brief relief for lawns and crops, but groundwater and reservoir levels are unlikely to rebound without prolonged, widespread storms. Residents are urged to continue conserving water where possible and prepare for off-and-on wet conditions through the week.
