Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana residents should prepare for potentially strong afternoon and evening storms Sunday, September 21, with rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches expected across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, storms could produce strong wind gusts late Sunday afternoon and evening, while widespread rain is forecast to continue into Monday night. The system is expected to bring steady showers that may help improve ongoing drought conditions in parts of the state.

Forecasters report that rainfall totals will range from 1 to 1.5 inches for most areas, with locally higher amounts closer to 2 inches possible near Bloomington, Martinsville, and Seymour. The heaviest rain is likely to arrive overnight into Monday, bringing more consistent precipitation.

The severe weather outlook places much of Indiana under a marginal risk for strong storms Sunday. While the threat of widespread severe weather remains low, residents should remain alert for isolated thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

Meteorologists note that today, Saturday, will be the final day of unseasonable warmth and lower humidity before the storm system moves in. Showers are expected to expand from west to east late Saturday and persist through much of next week.

Drivers and outdoor event planners should monitor conditions closely as storms develop, particularly during Sunday evening travel hours.
