Phoenix, Ariz. – Low temperatures stayed unusually warm across Arizona Thursday morning, with readings in the mid-80s in Phoenix and Glendale, well above seasonal norms. The bigger concern, however, comes later today as thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall move into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, storm chances will increase sharply by late Thursday afternoon and evening. A Flood Watch remains in effect for southwest Arizona and nearby areas of southeast California, including El Centro and Blythe, where rainfall rates could overwhelm dry washes and low-lying areas.
Cities across the Valley reported muggy overnight lows: Glendale at 86 degrees, Phoenix and Gila Bend at 85, and Scottsdale and Deer Valley at 81. Farther west, Yuma dropped to 80 and Blythe to 76. The cloud cover that kept temperatures up overnight will give way to some sun today, which could fuel stronger storms later.
Officials urge residents to avoid driving across flooded roads, charge mobile devices in case of power outages, and stay alert to rapidly changing conditions. More advisories are possible through tonight as rainfall totals build across the desert southwest.
