Greenwich Township, NJ – A routine traffic stop on I-78 in Warren County led to one of the largest drug seizures in recent New Jersey history, with state troopers confiscating more than $48 million worth of marijuana, THC, and cannabis products.

According to the New Jersey State Police, troopers arrested Vethanayagam Venches, 45, and Mohamed Nawshad, 48, both of Irving, Texas, after inspecting a tractor-trailer on Wednesday, September 10. The stop occurred near milepost 6.5 in Greenwich Township during a commercial vehicle inspection by the Mobile Safe Freight Unit.

Police said the odor of marijuana was detected inside the trailer, prompting a deeper search. The investigation uncovered approximately 7,645 pounds of hydroponic marijuana, 44,456 THC vape cartridges, 9,572 packages of THC gummies, 59 liters of cannabis resin, and 83 THC-infused cigarette packages.

Both suspects were taken into custody and face multiple drug-related charges. Authorities noted the discovery aligns with indicators of large-scale trafficking activity across state lines.

The case remains under investigation.
