San Francisco, Calif. – Drivers and residents across the Bay Area should brace for a sharp temperature swing this week as San Francisco heats up into the 80s Tuesday before a cooling trend and late-week showers arrive. The National Weather Service says the hottest stretch of September so far will push inland highs into the lower 80s Tuesday, making it one of the warmest days of the month.

According to the National Weather Service, light winds will keep conditions calm Tuesday morning before turning west at 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Heat won’t last long, though. By Wednesday, temperatures dip back into the 70s, with cooler air funneling into coastal neighborhoods and along the I-80 corridor.

Commutes on major routes like U.S. 101 and I-280 may feel the impacts of changing conditions as drivers face glaring sun Tuesday and slick roads later in the week. A slight chance of showers begins Thursday afternoon, with thunder possible after dark. Motorists should plan for reduced visibility and slower traffic in scattered downpours.

Families can enjoy mild evenings through midweek, but those with outdoor plans Thursday night should prepare for interruptions. Emergency managers recommend securing patio furniture and ensuring devices are charged in case of power interruptions from thunderstorms.

The heat peak Tuesday marks the transition into a cooler, unsettled fall pattern that could linger into the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if Thursday storms strengthen.
