Gaylord, Mich. – Drivers across northern Michigan faced dense fog early Friday, with visibility reduced to under a quarter mile in spots, creating dangerous morning travel conditions. The fog is expected to lift by late morning, but more unsettled weather could affect the region into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, there is a slight chance of thunderstorms developing late Friday night into Saturday, particularly across Emmet, Otsego, Cheboygan, and Presque Isle counties. The chance of rain and isolated lightning will linger through Saturday afternoon before conditions improve into Sunday.
Communities including Traverse City, Alpena, and Gaylord should prepare for patchy fog late Friday night into Saturday morning, which may again lower visibility for drivers along US-131 and M-32. Saturday storms are not expected to be severe, but brief downpours could create slick roadways and minor disruptions to outdoor weekend plans.
Travelers are urged to use low-beam headlights in fog, allow extra time for driving, and monitor for lightning if planning outdoor activities. By Sunday, skies turn mostly sunny, and the drier trend should last into next week.
The National Weather Service notes additional advisories may be issued if storm activity increases, but spotter activation is not currently expected.
