Melbourne, Fla. – Dangerous surf and heavy rain are creating a double threat along Florida’s east coast today, with both rip current risks and flooding concerns extending through Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, beaches in Volusia, Brevard, and Indian River counties are under a high risk of rip currents, while St. Lucie and Martin counties face a moderate risk. Surf will run between 2 to 4 feet, and officials warn the currents could be life-threatening. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the ocean and follow lifeguard instructions.

At the same time, a stalled front and deep moisture are fueling widespread showers and thunderstorms across central Florida. Rain chances run as high as 80% in Daytona Beach, Melbourne, and Vero Beach today, with localized flooding possible in low-lying and urban areas. Orlando, Sanford, and Leesburg may also see roadway ponding during afternoon downpours.

Drivers are advised to slow down during heavy rain and avoid flooded roads. Beachgoers should be aware that calm, sunny weather can still produce strong rip currents.

The unsettled pattern is expected to persist through much of the week, with storm chances above 70% for most of east central Florida. Additional advisories may be issued if rainfall totals climb higher.
