Pueblo, Colo. – Dangerous storms are expected to build across Colorado this afternoon, bringing large hail and damaging winds to much of the state. Showers and thunderstorms will develop over the mountains around 1 p.m. Sunday before spreading east and strengthening through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, storms are likely to intensify by 5 p.m. as they reach the eastern plains. Forecasters warn the strongest cells could produce hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, creating hazardous travel and the potential for power outages.

Communities from Colorado Springs to Limon and east toward Lamar should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions. Drivers on I-25 and I-70 may face sudden downpours and low visibility, while residents in rural eastern counties face the greatest risk of severe wind damage.

Emergency managers urge Coloradans to secure outdoor items, stay off the roads during peak storm hours, and keep phones and devices charged in case of outages.
