Austin, Texas – Heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding across much of South-Central Texas today, with the heaviest rainfall expected through the afternoon and early evening. Drivers along the I-35 corridor, from Austin to San Antonio, may encounter water-covered roads as storms shift south and taper off overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, tropical moisture will bring widespread showers and thunderstorms with rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches possible in localized areas. The agency issued a Level 1 of 4 risk for excessive rainfall, meaning flash flooding could quickly develop in flood-prone locations such as low water crossings and urban streets.
Bexar, Travis, and Hays counties are under the greatest risk early in the day, with the threat expanding south toward Medina and Atascosa counties by evening. Officials warn that creeks and streams could rise rapidly, especially in western areas where soils are already saturated.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways, keep cell phones charged in case of power outages, and monitor local alerts for changing conditions. Flood watches and advisories remain possible through tonight as the system weakens.
