RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina is starting Sunday with a dramatic temperature drop as a cold front pushes across the state, cutting highs by 15 to 20 degrees compared to Saturday. Afternoon temperatures will stay in the 70s across much of central North Carolina, with the southeast corner holding in the lower 80s.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the front is also triggering isolated to widely scattered showers, especially near the coast where a few thunderstorms could develop. Areas such as Fayetteville, Clinton, and Laurinburg may see highs around 82, while the Triangle will remain cooler in the low to mid-70s.

Drivers across Wake, Durham, and Johnston counties may encounter brief wet roads, though rainfall amounts are expected to remain light. Farther east, Wilson and Rocky Mount could see heavier pockets of rain closer to the coastal plain.

Officials recommend keeping outdoor plans flexible and carrying rain gear, particularly if traveling eastward toward I-95 or the Outer Banks later in the day.

Cooler air remains in place through midweek, with only gradual warming expected. Additional advisories may be issued if storms along the coast intensify this evening.
