FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected across northern Arizona Friday and Saturday, bringing the risk of heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning before drier conditions settle in next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, storms will be most widespread through Saturday evening, with favored areas including much of northern Arizona. By Sunday, storm coverage is expected to shrink to isolated cells, mainly over the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains.
The primary hazards with these storms include localized flooding from heavy downpours, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning and wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs or make driving difficult. Motorists on I-40 and U.S. 89 should remain alert to rapidly changing conditions and reduced visibility during storm bursts. Outdoor plans, including camping and hiking, could be impacted by sudden lightning strikes.
Drier air begins to build across the region Monday, with clear skies and calmer weather expected through midweek.
