Fair Oaks, IN – A Fair Oaks man was taken into custody after allegedly displaying a firearm and firing rounds into a field during a disturbance Saturday evening, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said deputies responded around 7 p.m. to a 911 call from a residence under construction about one mile east of Fair Oaks. The caller reported that Joseph J. Amelio, 39, allegedly came onto the property, argued with individuals present, and displayed a gun while yelling. Witnesses told deputies they also heard gunshots.

According to the sheriff’s office, witnesses reported that Amelio allegedly became upset over generator noise, pulled a handgun from his waistband, and waved it while yelling. Though the firearm was not said to be intentionally aimed at anyone, it was allegedly pointed in the direction of others briefly. Deputies were told that Amelio later left on a lawnmower, allegedly fired several shots into a nearby field, and then returned home.

Amelio was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Detention Center, where he faces charges of two counts of intimidation, a Level 5 felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.

Authorities emphasized that arrests and charges are merely accusations, and every person is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
