Duluth, Minn. – Much of the northern Midwest will wake up to the season’s first widespread frost as temperatures dip to freezing levels overnight into Thursday morning. Gardeners and farmers from North Dakota through northern Minnesota and into Wisconsin are urged to protect sensitive plants ahead of the chill.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Grand Forks, Duluth, Twin Cities, Green Bay, and La Crosse, frost advisories remain in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday. Low temperatures between 32 and 36 degrees are expected across counties including Beltrami, Roseau, Carlton, Itasca, Oneida, Vilas, Marathon, and Rusk. Tribal lands such as the Fond du Lac Band, Red Cliff Band, and Bad River Reservation are also within the advisory area.

Residents in Duluth, Superior, Bemidji, International Falls, Rhinelander, and surrounding towns should expect patchy frost capable of damaging gardens and late-season crops. Officials recommend covering outdoor plants or moving them inside to avoid loss.

The cold snap may also affect morning commuters, with fog and slick spots possible in rural valleys. Conditions will improve after sunrise, but similar overnight lows may return later this week.

Frost advisories remain active until 8 a.m. Thursday, and the National Weather Service warns additional alerts are possible if clear skies and calm winds persist.
