Aberdeen, S.D. – South Dakota drivers and residents should brace for dangerous crosswinds Thursday as gusts climb past 50 mph across much of the state. The National Weather Service has issued multiple wind advisories, warning of hazardous travel and scattered power outages.

According to the NWS offices in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, winds will strengthen late Thursday morning, peaking between noon and sunset. Sustained northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph in central counties including Hughes, Stanley, and Dewey. Eastern areas such as Brown, Beadle, and Davison counties will see slightly lower gusts near 45 to 50 mph by late afternoon.

Cities from Pierre to Aberdeen to Mitchell should prepare for difficult driving, especially on open stretches of I-90 and Highway 281. High-profile vehicles, including semis and farm equipment, face the greatest risk. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects such as trash bins, lawn furniture, and harvest equipment to prevent damage or debris hazards.

The advisory covers most of central and eastern South Dakota through 9 p.m. Thursday, with conditions easing overnight. More updates may follow if winds persist into the weekend.
