Williamston, MI – A 40-year-old man died early Monday after allegedly driving recklessly with a firearm and later being found deceased in a burning truck in a wooded area near Elm Road and Frost Road in Ingham County.

According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 3 a.m. when deputies, along with officers from Meridian Township and Williamston Police Departments, responded to 390 W. Grand River Avenue. Reports indicated an intoxicated man with no shirt was in an apartment parking lot carrying a long gun and allegedly threatening bystanders.

Police said the suspect fled southbound on Elm Road in his truck before officers arrived. Multiple 911 callers reported the truck driving erratically and the driver allegedly waving a firearm. One caller stated the vehicle had crashed near Elm Road and Frost Road and was on fire.

Law enforcement established a perimeter after hearing gunfire and what appeared to be exploding ammunition coming from the truck. Specialized units, including the Ingham Regional Special Response Team and Lansing Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team, deployed a drone and armored vehicles for officer protection due to the ongoing threat.

The Northeast Ingham Emergency Service Authority extinguished the fire. Authorities later confirmed the 40-year-old man was found deceased inside the truck. No other injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s office has not released the man’s name as of Monday morning. The incident remains under investigation.
