MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Fog and heat will shape travel and outdoor plans this Labor Day, as Minnesota faces shifting weather conditions. Drivers on I-94 and I-35 should prepare for reduced visibility early Monday, with fog lingering through midmorning. Warm air quickly takes over by the afternoon, with highs climbing into the upper 70s across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and much of central Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, visibility could drop below one mile in some low-lying areas. That may affect early-morning travel for holiday commuters. Motorists are urged to slow down and use headlights in fog-prone stretches. By midmorning, skies clear and heat builds, making for a dry and warm Labor Day afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms return Tuesday afternoon, with the best chance along the I-94 corridor. Stronger storms could bring heavy downpours and brief gusty winds. Rainfall totals are expected to remain under a half-inch, but lightning may impact evening events.

By midweek, cooler and drier air filters in from the north. Highs on Wednesday will hold near 70°F, with overnight lows dipping into the 40s by Thursday night. Residents can expect more fall-like conditions heading into next weekend.

Holiday travelers should enjoy mostly calm conditions on Labor Day itself, but keep backup plans for Tuesday when storms may briefly disrupt commutes and outdoor activities. Weather alerts may be issued if storms intensify.
