Memphis, Tennessee – An elevated fire danger is gripping the Mid-South this afternoon, with low humidity and gusty winds creating a ripe environment for the rapid spread of fires. The risk is widespread, impacting much of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Residents are urged to use extreme caution with any outdoor activities that could produce a spark.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, minimum relative humidity values have dropped to around 30 percent across the region. This, combined with recent drought conditions and winds gusting up to 10 mph, has significantly heightened the risk. Any small fire, whether from a discarded cigarette or a controlled burn, could quickly get out of control.

The risk is particularly high in western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and eastern Arkansas. Agencies like the Tennessee Division of Forestry and the Mississippi Forestry Commission are on high alert and advising residents to postpone any outdoor burning. Authorities are stressing that even small actions, such as parking a hot vehicle in tall grass, could ignite a blaze.

Fire warnings are expected to remain in effect through Saturday evening as conditions persist. Additional advisories could be issued if the weather continues to worsen. Officials recommend having a fire extinguisher handy and keeping a close eye on any outdoor activity.
