Hastings, Nebraska – Residents across central Nebraska are under a flood watch as additional thunderstorms are expected to develop through today and tonight. The heavy rain could lead to excessive rainfall and flash flooding, especially in areas that have already seen significant downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a flood watch is in effect until Sunday afternoon. Scattered thunderstorms are anticipated to produce rainfall rates of over two inches per hour in localized areas. While most regions are expected to receive one to two inches of rain through Monday, some isolated areas could see more than four inches, increasing the risk of significant flooding.

The areas most at risk include the Tri-Cities region, with cities like Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings, as well as surrounding counties such as Hall, Adams, and Buffalo. Roads and low-lying areas, including underpasses, are particularly vulnerable to flooding. Motorists should be prepared for possible road closures and avoid driving through standing water. Remember, it only takes a small amount of water to stall a vehicle or sweep it away.

Heavy rain is also expected to impact communities in south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas. This additional rainfall could exacerbate ongoing flooding issues in these regions. Residents should monitor local alerts and have a plan in place to move to higher ground if necessary. The threat is expected to last through the weekend, and people should stay updated on the latest warnings.
