Michigan City, Ind. – Holiday weekend plans along southern Lake Michigan start with a reminder of safety Friday as waves up to 6 feet create hazardous swimming conditions. The National Weather Service warns beachgoers in Berrien and La Porte counties to avoid entering the water this morning due to strong currents and dangerous surf.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, northeast winds at 10 mph are fueling waves of 3 to 6 feet. Conditions are expected to gradually improve, with waves subsiding to 2 to 4 feet this afternoon. By evening, the high swim risk should ease, allowing safer conditions for those heading to the beaches.
Berrien County beaches are expected to see improvement first, followed by La Porte County later in the day. Officials urge anyone near the shoreline to stay out of the water until waves decrease and to avoid walking on piers, where strong currents remain a threat.
Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are expected to dominate the rest of the holiday weekend, bringing comfortable highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s.
