Orlando, Fla. – Holiday weekend plans across Central Florida may be disrupted as daily rounds of thunderstorms bring heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds through Labor Day. Drivers and beachgoers should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, storm chances rise to 80 percent across the region Saturday and Sunday, with rainfall totals reaching 1 to 3 inches in some areas. Flooding of low-lying roads and ponding on highways is possible, especially in Volusia, Brevard, Seminole, and Orange counties. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 excessive rainfall risk for East Central Florida.
Storms are most likely in the afternoon and evening hours, fueled by the inland-moving sea breeze and outflow boundaries. Gusty winds up to 50 mph could down tree limbs and make travel hazardous, while lightning strikes pose a serious risk for outdoor activities.
In Daytona Beach and along the Space and Treasure coasts, rip currents remain a moderate risk, and officials urge swimmers to stay near lifeguards. Residents are encouraged to avoid flooded roads, secure loose outdoor items, and have backup power sources charged in case of outages.
Thunderstorm chances remain elevated through Monday, with the highest impacts expected each afternoon and evening. Additional advisories are possible over the weekend.
