Austin, Texas – South Central Texas is bracing for a soggy holiday weekend as thunderstorms build across the region Saturday and Sunday, bringing cooler air and a noticeable break from triple-digit heat.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, widespread rain chances will develop over the weekend, especially in the Hill Country and along the I-35 corridor. The highest chances for storms come Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening, with scattered downpours capable of producing lightning and brief heavy rain.
High temperatures, which have held in the upper 90s to near 103 degrees this week, will dip into the low 90s by early next week. Cities like San Antonio, Austin, and New Braunfels should see highs near 91 to 93 degrees by Monday. Heat index values that reached as high as 107 Friday will ease significantly once rain and clouds move in.
Travelers heading through I-35 or U.S. 281 should expect slower traffic during storm bursts. Outdoor plans for barbecues, lake trips, or high school football may be interrupted—residents are urged to keep backup indoor activities ready.
Rain chances remain elevated into Tuesday, keeping conditions unsettled. More advisories could be issued if storms intensify.
