Racine, WI – With the start of the school year approaching, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office announced it will increase enforcement against reckless driving, particularly in and around school zones. Deputies will be monitoring these areas closely and issuing citations to violators.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies will focus on speeding, distracted driving, and unsafe behavior during school drop-off and pick-up hours. Sheriff Christopher Schmaling emphasized that the initiative comes after daily complaints from residents about speeding and unsafe drivers throughout Racine County.

The department issued a list of reminders for motorists, including obeying school bus laws, slowing down in school zones, staying alert at crosswalks, putting away cell phones, and being patient during heavy traffic times. Drivers are also urged to respect crossing guards, plan for delays during bad weather, and remember what deputies call the “five C’s” of safe driving: courtesy, calm, concentrate, cautious, and control.

“This behavior must stop: slow down, buckle up, put down your phone, and drive responsibly,” Sheriff Schmaling said. “Parents, talk to your young drivers about the enormous responsibility that comes with operating a vehicle. It only takes seconds to end someone’s life and change your own forever. Drive safe or expect a citation.”

The sheriff’s office said deputies will have zero tolerance for reckless behavior in school zones this fall. Officials urged the community to treat school safety as a shared responsibility to protect children, families, and staff.
