Binghamton, N.Y. – Warm sunshine across New York’s Southern Tier today will give way to a cold front tonight, bringing scattered showers and a small chance for thunderstorms. Highs reached the low to mid-70s this afternoon before clouds increased across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, rain will move in from the northwest between 6 p.m. and midnight, with showers lingering until early Friday morning. Some communities, including Elmira, Ithaca, and Cortland, face the best chance for steady rain, while isolated thunderstorms may develop before midnight.
Roads could become slick during the evening commute and overnight travel. Residents are urged to allow extra time if driving and to watch for reduced visibility in heavier downpours. Showers are expected to clear by sunrise Friday.
Behind the front, fall-like air arrives quickly. Highs north of the Southern Tier, including Syracuse and Oneonta, will struggle to reach the upper 50s Friday. Binghamton, Elmira, and much of NEPA will top out in the mid-60s to near 70, a noticeable drop from today’s warmth.
Additional lake-effect showers could develop Friday afternoon north of Ithaca and Syracuse. More advisories may be issued if winds strengthen over the weekend.
