Hastings, Neb. – Drivers in south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas should prepare for reduced visibility tonight as patchy fog develops, creating hazards along Highway 281 and Highway 183. The National Weather Service warns that some areas may see visibilities drop below a quarter mile overnight.
According to the National Weather Service office in Hastings, isolated thunderstorms are also possible tonight across far southern Nebraska and into Kansas, though no severe weather is expected. More widespread thunderstorm chances build Friday night and continue into Monday, with the potential for locally heavy downpours.
Residents in Hastings, Kearney, Grand Island, and surrounding counties could face slowdowns on rural roads and highways due to the combination of late-night fog and wet pavement. Weekend outdoor events may also be impacted by passing storms. The greatest rain chances arrive Saturday evening and again Sunday afternoon, with 30 to 50 percent coverage in the region.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low beams in fog, and avoid flooded roadways if heavy rainfall occurs. Those with holiday travel plans should monitor conditions closely as showers and storms linger into Labor Day.
Hazardous weather advisories remain in effect, with updates expected daily through Tuesday.
