Buffalo, N.Y. – Strong currents will make swimming dangerous along Lake Erie today, with officials urging beachgoers to stay out of the water. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Erie and Chautauqua counties, in effect from 10 a.m. Thursday through late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service office in Buffalo, the statement covers all Lake Erie beaches in northern Erie County and into Chautauqua. Forecasters warn of dangerous rip currents developing through the day, making swimming, wading, and floating especially risky.

Winds are expected to strengthen out of the southwest, fueling hazardous wave action along the shoreline. Local officials caution that even experienced swimmers could struggle in the currents. Safety agencies recommend avoiding the water entirely and keeping a safe distance from piers and jetties, where waves will be most forceful.

While today brings the primary risk on the beaches, conditions improve Friday as winds decrease and skies turn partly sunny. The weekend ahead looks favorable for outdoor plans across western New York, with highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s and dry skies.

Beach hazards remain in effect through tonight, and updates will be issued if conditions worsen.

Five Day Forecast for Buffalo, NY

  • Thursday: Showers and thunderstorms possible, high near 70. Breezy.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, high near 63.
  • Saturday: Sunny, high near 68.
  • Sunday: Sunny, high near 73.
  • Labor Day Monday: Sunny, high near 76.
