Flagstaff, Arizona – Widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across northern and central Arizona Wednesday afternoon, bringing the risk of heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning to areas including Flagstaff, Prescott, Sedona, and the Grand Canyon region.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, the highest chances for precipitation will occur between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. MST, with localized rainfall totals reaching up to half an inch—or more in isolated spots. The increase in moisture is being driven by remnants of Tropical Storm Juliette, enhancing monsoonal activity across the region.
Communities like Williams (69% chance), Payson (68%), and Sedona (63%) are all under moderate to high chances of afternoon storms. Residents should prepare for strong wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph, along with the possibility of flash flooding in low-lying or burn scar areas. Frequent lightning strikes also pose a threat, particularly to hikers and those in open areas.
Drivers should avoid flood-prone roadways and delay outdoor activities during peak storm hours. NWS Flagstaff urges residents to stay weather-aware, especially through the evening, as additional rounds of storms could arrive by early Thursday morning.
More updates and alerts may be issued if conditions intensify.
