Blacksburg, Va. – Much of Virginia is feeling a refreshing cooldown today as highs settle between the mid-60s and mid-70s west of the Blue Ridge and into the mid-70s to low 80s east of the ridge. Temperatures are running between 5 and 15 degrees below normal, offering a break from late August heat.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, winds are also playing a role, with afternoon breezes gusting between 10 and 20 mph. The strongest winds are expected across higher elevations and exposed ridges, though gusts will be felt across much of the region.

In Roanoke, residents can expect highs topping out near 77 degrees, while Blacksburg remains cooler in the lower 70s. Danville and Lynchburg should see slightly warmer conditions, with readings approaching 82 degrees. The cooler air is expected to persist into the evening, keeping overnight lows comfortable and mild.

Drivers should use caution on open stretches of roadway where wind gusts may push vehicles, especially along I-81 and U.S. 460. Outdoor plans should remain pleasant but prepare for breezy conditions.

The cooler-than-average pattern will hold into midweek, with another round of breezy afternoons possible before temperatures gradually return to seasonal levels.
