FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Northern Indiana will wake up to an unusually chilly late-August morning Wednesday, with temperatures set to dip into the mid-40s and low 50s. Fort Wayne could tie its 1910 record low of 45 degrees, while South Bend may drop to 49, close to its 1968 benchmark.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the coolest readings will occur away from Lake Michigan, where radiational cooling overnight enhances the drop. Records dating back to the late 1800s show just how rare it is to see this type of cold air settle into the region in late summer.

The crisp conditions will be noticeable in neighborhoods across Allen, St. Joseph, Elkhart, and surrounding counties. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the natural cool down by shutting off air conditioners and opening windows, though gardeners may want to monitor sensitive plants as mornings trend cooler than usual.

This unseasonable chill is expected to linger into midweek before temperatures slowly rebound toward more typical late-summer warmth. The Weather Service says record-challenging lows remain possible again by Thursday morning in some inland areas.
