Chicago, Illinois – Dangerous swimming conditions continue Tuesday along Lake Michigan, with the National Weather Service warning of life-threatening rip currents and high waves affecting beaches from Chicago north to Waukegan and south through northwest Indiana. Officials urge swimmers to stay out of the water as currents remain strong.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, high swim risk alerts are in effect through tonight, with conditions expected to gradually ease by Wednesday. Large waves, topping four feet in some areas, are creating dangerous currents that could pull even experienced swimmers away from shore.

Northwest Indiana beaches, including Gary and Michigan City, are under the highest threat, but Chicago and Evanston waters remain hazardous. Beachgoers are advised to avoid piers, breakwalls, and jetties where currents are strongest. The Chicago Park District has posted swim bans at several lakefront beaches.

Looking ahead, a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms may return Thursday, though most of the week will remain dry with highs in the 70s.

Hazardous beach conditions are expected to persist periodically into late week. Officials stress caution near the water until the risk subsides.
