DULUTH, Minn. – Showers and storms could move across northern Minnesota Wednesday, followed by a sharp cool down that may bring patchy frost by early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, scattered to widespread rain showers will develop Wednesday, with a chance for isolated thunderstorms in the Arrowhead. Highs will climb into the upper 70s before a cold front shifts winds north, dropping temperatures into the low 40s overnight.

By Thursday, skies will gradually clear with highs only in the low to mid-60s. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the 30s across portions of northeast Minnesota, raising the risk of frost in rural valleys and low-lying areas. Gardeners are urged to cover sensitive plants, and residents should prepare for brisk morning conditions.

Travel impacts are expected to be minimal, though wet roads Wednesday could lead to slower commutes, especially along Highway 61 near the North Shore and I-35 south of Duluth. Cooler, drier weather will settle in for the weekend, with mostly sunny skies returning.

Additional advisories may be issued if frost potential increases late Thursday night into Friday morning.
