South Bend, IN – A man was taken into custody Monday after a several-hour standoff that brought a SWAT response to the Laurel Woods Apartments in South Bend.

According to the South Bend Police Department, officers with the St. Joseph County Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrived around 9:30 a.m. Monday at the 600 block of Laurel Woods Court to locate a wanted individual. Police said the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot law enforcement when contact was made, prompting officers to back away and request additional support from SBPD’s SWAT Team and Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team.

Authorities reported that the entire apartment building was evacuated as a precaution during the incident. Negotiators and tactical officers worked for several hours before deploying distraction devices and taking the suspect into custody around 3 p.m.

Police said the suspect was transported to the hospital for evaluation. Another individual was also removed from the apartment but was released without charges.

No serious injuries were reported during the incident.

The St. Joseph County Police Department stated that additional details about the original warrant and ongoing investigation will be released at a later time.
