Portland, Oregon – Drivers heading into the Oregon Cascades and foothills could face slick roads and possible lightning strikes through 8 p.m. tonight, as a band of thunderstorms and heavy rain rolls across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, there’s a 25% chance of thunderstorms developing across the Cascades and adjacent foothills. While the probability remains low, forecasters warn the primary threats are heavy downpours and frequent lightning. Gusty winds are also possible during storm bursts.

Travelers along Highway 26 and Highway 20 should be especially cautious, as brief periods of intense rainfall could lead to ponding on roads, significantly raising the risk of hydroplaning. Officials urge drivers to slow down and increase following distance in rain-soaked areas.

The NWS reminds residents that if thunder is heard, lightning is close enough to strike—”When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors.” Anyone planning outdoor recreation in the Cascades should monitor the skies closely and have a shelter plan ready.

Storm chances will taper off later tonight, but localized showers may linger. Additional updates may follow if thunderstorm activity intensifies this evening.
