WILMINGTON, N.C. – Southeastern North Carolina will get one final burst of summer heat Monday before a cold front ushers in cooler and much drier weather through midweek. Temperatures are expected to reach near 90 degrees Monday afternoon with a 30 percent chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms along the coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the front will push across the region late Monday, dropping humidity levels significantly by Tuesday. Highs Tuesday will settle into the mid-80s, with overnight lows dipping into the lower 60s for many inland areas.

Beach towns from Wrightsville Beach to Oak Island may see brief showers today, but inland cities such as Burgaw, Whiteville, and Elizabethtown should remain mostly dry. Drivers along U.S. 17 and I-40 may encounter reduced visibility during any pop-up storms Monday afternoon.

The midweek outlook points to sunny, comfortable conditions. Wednesday’s highs will hold in the low 80s with lows falling into the upper 50s and mid-60s. Residents are advised to enjoy the cooler stretch, as late-summer warmth often makes a return heading into September.

The weather service says more updates will be issued if storm chances increase along the coast.
