Greenville, N.C. – Summer heat will ease across eastern North Carolina this week as a cold front ushers in cooler, drier air beginning Monday night. Inland communities such as Greenville will see highs drop into the low 80s with nighttime lows dipping into the upper 50s in spots, a welcome break from August’s humidity.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, the front will bring mostly clear skies inland through the week, while coastal towns including Hatteras face a lingering risk of scattered thunderstorms Monday and again heading into next weekend. Highs along the Outer Banks will hold in the upper 70s, with muggy evenings staying in the low to mid-70s.

Travelers heading east on U.S. 264 or U.S. 64 should be prepared for brief downpours near the shoreline early in the week, but no widespread flooding or severe weather is expected. Residents in inland counties can expect dry roads and cooler mornings, making for improved outdoor conditions.

Forecasters caution that unsettled weather may return along the coast by Friday into Sunday, with spotty showers possible. Inland areas are expected to stay dry through the weekend.
