Cleveland, Ohio – Boaters and lakeside residents in Northeast Ohio should remain alert through midday Wednesday as cooler air sweeping across Lake Erie sparks the potential for waterspouts and isolated lake effect showers.

According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, conditions will favor the formation of waterspouts beginning late Sunday and continuing through Wednesday, particularly during morning and early afternoon hours. The combination of cooler air aloft and the lake’s warm surface water is creating a prime environment for these rotating columns of air and mist to develop alongside scattered showers.

Mariners are urged to stay weather-aware and listen for updates from the Coast Guard and NWS. If a waterspout is sighted, officials advise moving at a 90-degree angle from its apparent path and seeking safe harbor immediately. No formal warnings have been issued yet, but alerts may be posted as activity increases.

This pattern may also bring brief downpours to communities from Lorain to Ashtabula, potentially affecting visibility and water conditions near the shore. More waterspouts are possible if any stronger showers form over the lake.

Waterspout risk continues until midday Wednesday, with updates likely as conditions evolve.
