Marquette, Mich. – Dangerous surf is battering the Lake Superior shoreline today, with Marquette and Alger Counties under a high swim risk as life-threatening waves and rip currents continue through Sunday evening. Officials are urging residents and visitors to stay out of the water and away from piers and break walls.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, conditions are especially hazardous at popular spots including Middle Bay near Presque Isle, McCarty’s Cove, Little Presque Isle, Au Train Bay, and beaches within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore such as Miners Beach and Grand Sable Dunes. Exposed sections of Grand Marais Harbor are also at high risk.

Waves are expected to remain powerful throughout the day, creating strong rip currents capable of pulling even experienced swimmers offshore. Authorities warn that break walls and piers are particularly dangerous during this event, as high surf can easily sweep people into the lake.

Beachgoers are advised to avoid swimming and instead choose alternative activities on shore. Those living near the water should secure boats and use caution when walking close to the shoreline.

The high swim risk is expected to last until tonight, with conditions easing as winds gradually weaken. Additional advisories may be issued if strong waves persist into Monday.
