Grand Junction, Colo. – Thunderstorms will rumble across western Colorado this afternoon and continue daily through the week, bringing threats of flash flooding, hail, and strong winds. The National Weather Service warns that heavy rain on recent burn scars and slot canyons could quickly trigger dangerous debris flows.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, widespread afternoon and evening storms will be fueled by monsoon moisture through at least midweek. The storms will produce frequent lightning, localized flooding, and gusty winds exceeding 45 mph. Some stronger cells could also drop small hail in addition to torrential rain.

Communities from Grand Junction to Montrose and Durango should prepare for sudden downpours, poor visibility, and rapidly rising streams. Drivers are urged to avoid low-lying roads and never attempt to cross flooded areas. Residents near burn scars are advised to keep alert for evacuation notices if debris flows develop.

Temperatures will remain near or slightly below normal through the week as the unsettled pattern continues. More alerts are possible if flooding increases.
