BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Drivers across the Southern Tier should prepare for wet roads and possible flooding as thunderstorms move in Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns that heavy rain could reduce visibility and make travel along I-81 dangerous into Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, storms will build after 2 p.m. Sunday, bringing gusty winds and a chance of thunder. Rainfall amounts could reach between a quarter and half an inch, with higher totals in stronger storms. The risk continues overnight, when scattered showers linger into early Monday.

Sunday’s high temperature will reach near 80 degrees, but muggy conditions and unstable air will fuel afternoon storms. South winds of 6 to 8 mph may strengthen during downpours. By Monday, skies partially clear, but isolated showers remain possible through the afternoon.

Residents are urged to plan ahead for potential travel delays, keep phones charged, and avoid driving through flooded intersections. Outdoor events in Broome and Tioga counties face the greatest risk of weather disruption late Sunday.

By Tuesday, calmer weather returns with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 70s. The region will stay cooler and drier through midweek before warming again by Friday.

Warnings remain in effect through Sunday night, and additional advisories could be issued if storms intensify.
