BURLINGTON, Vt. – A bright stretch of late-summer sun will give way to stormy skies this weekend as rain and thunderstorms move into northern Vermont. Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-80s by Saturday afternoon before showers arrive by late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a 40% chance of showers develops after 2 a.m. Sunday, followed by widespread rain and possible thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. Winds will also pick up, with gusts as high as 28 mph along Lake Champlain and in open valleys.
By Sunday evening, the rain threat increases to 70% with locally heavy downpours possible. The unsettled weather will linger into Monday with periods of showers and a chance of thunderstorms, particularly in Chittenden, Addison, and Washington counties.
Travelers should expect slick roads on I-89 and reduced visibility during heavier bursts of rain. Outdoor plans in Burlington, Essex, and South Burlington may be disrupted, especially on Sunday afternoon and evening. Residents are urged to keep devices charged and secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty winds.
The wet pattern looks to ease by Tuesday with partly sunny skies returning midweek. Additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorms intensify.
