Accomac, Va. – Law enforcement across Virginia’s Eastern Shore reported flooded roads Tuesday afternoon as several towns in Accomack and Northampton counties dealt with 2 to 5 inches of rainfall in just hours. Water levels were rising quickly in low-lying areas, prompting urgent flood warnings that remain in effect through the early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, flooding is ongoing in places like Onley, Melfa, Wachapreague, Exmore and Nassawadox. Additional rainfall of up to an inch could worsen conditions before warnings expire around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Drivers were urged to avoid Route 13 in spots where water covered the roadway and to steer clear of smaller county roads near creeks and marshes. “Turn around, don’t drown” reminders were stressed as most flood-related deaths in Virginia occur in vehicles.

Residents in towns such as Quinby, Willis Wharf and Birdsnest may also see drainage systems overwhelmed until water levels recede. Emergency officials recommend staying home until waters clear, keeping phones charged in case of power outages, and checking on neighbors in flood-prone areas.

Warnings remain in effect through this evening, and additional advisories may be issued if heavy downpours persist.
