Buxton, North Carolina – Floodwaters are already pushing across NC-12 in Buxton, with coastal flooding expected to worsen as high tide peaks around 5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, water levels are rising along parts of the Outer Banks well ahead of schedule, particularly in low-lying areas of Dare County. A traffic camera image shows water breaching NC-12 southbound lanes near Buxton, with more flooding likely as high tide approaches.

Drivers are urged to avoid NC-12 and surrounding roads where saltwater has begun to pool. Coastal communities from Hatteras to Rodanthe may experience water-covered roadways through the evening. Emergency officials are warning against non-essential travel along the Outer Banks as tides and onshore winds continue to push water inland.

Residents should move vehicles to higher ground and prepare for possible disruptions to local services or road closures through tonight. This event follows similar flooding patterns seen during last summer’s August king tide event.

The high tide is expected to crest just after 5 p.m. ET, and additional coastal flooding advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
